how to be a pirate

Author: Cressida Cowell
Format: Audible Audio Book
Listening Length: 2 hours and 54 minutes
Narrator: David Tennant

Publisher’s Summary: Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was a Viking Hero–dashing, brave, and ever so clever. But even Viking heroes have to begin somewhere. In this rip-roaring adventure he recounts his early days–when he still had a lot to learn about swordfights, shipwrecks, and homicidal dragons….

Fishlegs: I didn’t notice so much in the first book, but Fishlegs is definitely different than the movies. For one, he’s a skinny boy with a squint. Secondly, he’s not as learned about dragons as Hiccup. He learns more from Hiccup than the reverse, but he’s equally stalwart and is a true friend to Hiccup.

Toothless: I’m enjoying Toothless’ development. Dragons are not supposed to be nice or loyal and Toothless is both. Sometimes against his better judgement. 🙂

Favorite Scene: My favorite scene is getting to Grimbeard the Ghastly’s treasure… and I mean the real one!

Cleverness: I love how clever Cressida Cowell is with her word play in the books. It makes me smile and laugh as I listen. She has a talent for naming things in ways that are perfectly her, fit in the world she’s building, and are also astute.

Societal Pressures: This book shows why it’s important to watch out for what society tries to teach us and how to stand up for what is morally right. Hiccup is lousy at being a Viking hero in the traditional sense. He can’t sword fight, he can’t frighten foreigners, and he can’t find treasure. What he can do is listen, stand up for himself, put himself forward, and treat others well.

Also… Not all obstacles and challenges can be met with brawn. Your mind is your best weapon.

Narrator Review: David Tennant continues to be an amazing narrator. You may have to keep a hand on the volume button as music is added into the audio book by the producers.
