Title: How to Train Your Dragon
Author: Cressida Cowell
Format: Audible Audio Book
Listening Length: 3 hours and 30 minutes
Narrator: David Tennant
Publisher’s Summary: Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is a truly extraordinary Viking hero known throughout Vikingdom as “the Dragon Whisperer”…but it wasn’t always so. Travel back to the days when the mighty warrior was just a boy, the quiet and thoughtful son of the Chief of the Hairy Hooligans. Can Hiccup capture a dragon and train it without being torn limb from limb? Join the adventure as the small boy finds a better way to train his dragon and become a hero!
Warning: The How to Train Your Dragon book series is very different to the movies. Most notably in Toothless, who is not a Night Fury but a Common or Garden dragon. Toothless is small for his species, green, and can talk! Hiccup understands the dragon language and can talk back. Pretty nifty. Neither Hiccup nor Toothless are disabled and Toothless is too small to ride.
Why You’ll Love Hiccup: He’s a normal, average kid who wants to please his father, but doesn’t fit in among his Viking tribe. They’re very aggressive and he’s very scholarly. It’s a nice juxtaposition of what everyone expects you to be and following your own drum in a sweetly presented way.
Favorite Scene: When the kids’ dragons are peppering the Green Death with feather bombs. That was hilarious.
Narrator Review: David Tennant (from Dr. Who) narrates beautifully. He’s funny, entertaining, and creates a full world with just his voice. At times his voice sounds so familiar you would swear he acted Stoic the Vast and Gobber the Belch in the movies too (he didn’t). He gets two thumbs way up. I would listen to him read other children’s books.
Volume Warning: I don’t hate the music interludes in the audio book like other reviewers do. I do however dislike that the music is about ten times louder than David. I blame the producers for this annoyance in an otherwise flawless book production. Also, sometimes when David is whispering for dialogue the volume is too low.
Thanks Ner for the recommendation!
