If You Love the Iron Fey Trilogy: Puck or Ash? (Poll & Discussion)

This discussion assumes you’ve read Iron King and Iron Daughter and Midwinter’s Passage (the novella in between the two books).

Pros for Puck:

  • He’s her best friend and an argument could be made he is her only true friend. Prior to the series starting, Meghan was invisible to many because of her fairy blood.
  • Puck has been her protector for years keeping her safe from the Never Never realm and all the lovelies therein. Pretty tough job. Once in Never Never Puck doesn’t need Meghan to strike a deal with him to follow her into the trouble coming. He goes willingly and because he cares.
  • He’s the darling of the Summer Court. As jester to Oberon, Puck can get away with much and ask for favors and allowances to smooth things over for Meghan.
  • He’s Robin Goodfellow from Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and is thus nearly indestructible. The more humans know who you are the more powerful and immortal you can be.
  • His fighting style is hardcore with a hint of hilarity with sticks becoming bears. His style is heavy on magics which could be very useful in the upcoming war against the Iron Fey, as I believe magic to be the antithesis of technology.
  • The Weasley twins and Sirius Black would love him for his pranks and his wit. They’d all be thick as thieves if they ever appeared in the same book series.

Biggest Con for Puck:

  • Puck had plenty of time to make a move and instead remained silent. As far as I’m concerned Meghan being with Ash is his own fault. His lack of action practically threw Meghan at Ash. If Puck and Meghan are going to be together he’s got an uphill battle to fight now because her feelings are firmly settled on Ash. He could have been with her, but he chose not to pursue until somebody else had done it first. When his declaration finally came was it too late? It’s a sad last laugh on Puck, the guy stuck perhaps permanently in the friend zone.

Pros for Team Ash:

  • Ash is royal where Puck is not. As the youngest Unseelie prince it is unlikely he will ever be king of his own court and have total control, but his position gives him privileges Puck can’t hope to achieve.
  • He’s a 1000 + years old which means he’s as powerful as or more powerful than Puck to have lasted this long. Immortality is his and he is equally hard to destroy.
  • Ash is a great dancer and swordfighter. Skills he has honed to perfection making him limber and graceful. As such Ash cuts a dashing figure and is mesmerizing in battle. He’s protective and determined to see Meghan safe. So much so that he’s willing to take on the biggest bad Never Never ever saw.
  • He is there when Puck isn’t. He goes to the Iron Kingdom when Puck is trapped in a tree healing from severe wounds.
  • The Winter Court is harsh and cruel to those who show weakness. Over time this has meant that Ash has become a hard, cold, ruthless opponent. But he wasn’t always that way. He used to be best friends with Puck. He had loved. And while it terrifies him, while he knows it is wrong, he’s fallen in love again with Meghan. Around her you get this feeling he’s rediscovering his true self, the person he has to hide away at court.
  • Speaking of knowing it is wrong to fall in love with Meghan… Ash and Meghan are the ultimate starcrossed lovers. He’s of the Winter Court. She is of the Summer Court. From time to time members of both courts have fallen for one another, but it is forbidden. Oberon and Mab demand such couples to renounce their love forever or suffer banishment forever from Never Never. He risks fading away into nothing and mortality from permanent banishment to be with her.

Biggest Con for Ash:

  • Meghan has a hard time reading him. He’s that aloof hero whose motives are hard to figure out. Ash is constantly struggling with himself. He knows he should push Meghan away and does time and again, but then flips and pulls her closer because he loves her, to hell with the Courts’ rules about their relationship. But instead of being straight with her he keeps things silent. Because of this consistent level of miscommunication and his earlier courting methods Meghan is sometimes unsure of him. She had questioned his love for her in Mab’s Court when he seemed like a stranger to her.

Conclusion: There’s still one last book to tell and I have a feeling being stuck outside of Never Never will become a major problem for Ash and Meghan. Nobody is going to let it rest. Not yet at least and the two could be easily split apart. With Robbie on the inside what’s a Prince to do?

As for me I’m firmly Team Ash. I hope when all hell breaks loose Ash isn’t left behind the way Puck was in Iron King. I need my Ash like a smoker needs their next shot of Nicotine. I’m that addicted and that obsessed. So here’s to following Puck’s footsteps and having Ash break all the rules.

I am so just so sick and tired of heroines in these books falling for the bad boy. Come on. It is just so cliche and I am really just tired of it. I really wish Meghan would be with Puck just so we can have something different in our books. The girl always goes for the mysterious dude with a seemingly dark heart. Please. Why not shake it up a little and have her be with the nice guy who is actually not such a cold, evil drag?

  2. I like the broody guy. As much as I like Puck, Meghan isn’t the girl for him. Not really. They would have fun and it would be a good relationship while it lasted but I don’t think they’d stay together in the end. I’m all for Team Ash.

I LOVE Puck. He was hilarious, devoted, and a great fighter. He stood by Meghan pretty much her whole life and was her true friend. He took a bullet for her and came back to continue to fight for her. He got his heart ripped out when she got banished and he thought he would never see her again. It was obvious he loved her from the beginning but Meghan was to blind to see that. He would’ve made a move, but he was probably too scared that it would destroy their friendship and that she wouldn’t accept him.

I love Puck! He’s a great character and I thought that he would be really great with Meghan because he can be both a best friend and a lover. I don’t mind Ash, but I think he’s a bit…boring. It’s always the prince that the girl ends up with, and he always treats her like trash, but she’d obviously still cling to him. I am so tired of that, and especially stories about starcrossed lovers. Come on, it’s like Twilight all over again. I don’t see much stories about best friends falling in love than with starcrossed lovers.

  5. I personally think Ash is good for her considering that Ash supports her, he couldn’t protect her before because he was technically forced to be a enemy. You can tell he loves her, it’s just that he doesn’t know how to show it considering that he hasn’t loved in years. He knows how she feels and that in the end of iron queen he doesn’t fight to get her to a docter, i mean i know that he was a knight but you could tell that he knew that she wanted this to happen. And he doesn’t really treat her like trash it’s just that he doesn’t show how he feels because that could destroy both of them. Ashes heart was ripped out when he found out that Puck and Meghan kissed. And he doesn’t force her to go far into the relationship when she doesn’t want to. but Puck might if you’ve read about the first time they kissed. So i’m team Ash

  6. at first i was all for puck intil ash came along, say what you may about the same old story but i think ash is it. puck is a must in the book but only as a best friend without ash everything would be a joke i think its a good thing meghan chose him to be hers. its just the right way to end

I’d hate to sound like a noob, but I wanted to let you know that Puck is waaayy older than Ash. Sorry, couldn’t help myself. Which team am I on? PUCK! I go for the guy who has always been there, protecting me. I don’t want a guy who basically called me a tool, and only remembered me due to an “old love.” I was very upset Puck hadn’t made his move! But for good reasons! I mean, could you tell someone you loved them, when they thought you were someone your not? Could you kiss her; it is basically a stranger in your arms. Meghan knew nothing about the real “Robbie” and if Puck wanted something with her, it was going to be REAL! And legit! I like Ash, but really? I mean, he would’ve killed her anyday, hands down, if not the resemblance to Ariella! Puck took a bullet for her! Risked DYING (and don’t say that’s not a big deal- he’s a LEGEND!) just so Meghan could save her brother. And **MAJOR SPOILERS** the fact that Puck had helped his archnemesis to Meghan is TRUE LOVE!

  8. Puck is so fascinating in every way! He definitely should get his own happy ending. I guess the reason I never gave Ash a thought was because I read Summer’s Crossing first and totally fell for Puck. Puck is so hilarious and sweet! He is my dream guy and the sole reason I love this series. Yeah!!! TEAM PUCK!!!!

  9. She should have picked PUCK he was soo much fun and ALWAYS there for her when Ash was being a pouty bitch and hiding and doing the whole “woe is me, we’re enemies it can never be” crap…fucking man up! Ash annoyed the hell out of me even when they were free to be together he was still distant and cold and fucking annoying……lol

  10. I don’t know…Ash seems like the obvious guy here but in my opinion he reminds me of edward cullen from twilight. Always serious and sexy. Puck can be both. While most the time he’s a joker the books have indicated at times he can settle down and be romantic. So maybe it would be nice for a change if the girl picked the not sappy romantic guy. i’m team puck(:

    • oh, btw the whole i’m-so-serious-and-sexy-and-i-can’t-make-up-my-mind thing is really boring on ash’s part

  11. Meh…. both Puck and Ash aren’t great. There really isn’t much too debate because it’s obvious that Kagawa wrote Ash to be Megan’s true love.
But God, he is SO boring. Sure he’s hot (scratch that, cold, whatever), but not much of a personality, other than his emo angst.
Puck just annoyed me and I didn’t find him funny.

By the way, has anyone read Kagawa’s new vampire novel? I kinda got bored in the first few chapters, but god, if the main character falls in love with a vampire I will die.

“You think I don’t know pain?” Puck shook his head at me. “Or loss? I’ve been around a lot longer than you, prince! I know what love is, and I’ve lost
my fair share, too. Just because we have a different way of handling it, doesn’t mean I don’t have scars of my own.”
“Name one,” I scoffed. “Give me one instance where you haven’t—”
“Meghan Chase!” Puck roared, startling me into silence. I blinked, and he sneered at me. “Yeah, your highness. I know what loss is. I’ve loved that
girl since before she knew me. But I waited. I waited because I didn’t want to lie about who I was. I wanted her to know the truth before anything else.
So I waited, and I did my job. For years, I protected her, biding my time, until the day she went into the Nevernever after her brother. And then you
came along. And I saw how she looked at you. And for the first time, I wanted to kill you as much as you wanted to kill me.”

  13. I agree with one of the other comments (Kat’s). Even though Meghan might end up with Ash (most likely), Puck should still get his own happy ending. Maybe not with Meghan exactly, but maybe continue the story from his point of view.
Am I the only one who wants to read about Puck’s adventures? I think that would be awesome.

  14. Ash Fan

Hey they got it wrong sorta in the Cons for Team Ash. It says that he’s 1000+ which says as powerful or more powerful than Puck. But Puck has been around much longer than Ash as been. And TEAM ASH TOTES. xD.
