What Was Your First Romance?

romanceJane at Dear Author asked readers what is an Appropriate Age for Allowing Girls to Read Romances? What do you think?

I don’t know about you, but my first romance was in my early teens. I’m fairly certain it was Gamble by LaVyrle Spencer as it’s the earliest I can remember reading.

My first romance couple was the same as Kat’s. Can you guess who? Several readers might also have encountered this couple first too. Hint: from the Nancy Drew mystery series. Nancy Drew and Ned Nickerson forever!

Now what about you? What was your first romance novel? Was it category? Single title? Did it make it to your favorites? Is it still one of your favorites?

  1. How young is too young? Well, if my mom actually ALLOWED me to read her romances, she sure wouldn’t have let me when I did! I think I was in the 5th grade or thereabouts. Course that was category, so hardly counted for sexual content. I was i the 8th grade for that, I clearly remember reading my first Judith Krantz then. Who isn’t exactly romance, but she did have those naughty scenes. 🙂

  2. I was about 13…There was a store where I’d go with my mom & grandma(who’s now passed). We’d go every single weekend & there was a long table of books on sale. They were “First Love from Silhouette” series. They’d buy me 1 every weekend–I don’t have these books any longer but this is where my love of reading began.

    • Susan, that’s so sweet. Aw… 😀

      Isabel R., I hear you! Who knows when I would have been “allowed” to read them. I wasn’t in trouble when I was finally caught. (Was found out when my mom went to read one of the Spencer’s I was ahem… borrowing.)

  3. I’m sure I was about 12 or 13 and my first adult romance novel was by Johanna Lindsey, I think it was Joining. I may have read a few of my mom’s categories first, but I can’t remember. Mostly I read the category romances that cost $3 at Wal-Mart back then.

    Thinking back, I’m pretty amazed that my mom knew what I was reading but never said a word and actually bought them for me.

  4. I was in high school and my older cousin’s friend lent us some of favorites. My first was Julie Garwood’s “The Bride.”

  5. I was definitely not “allowed” to read romance novels but I did read my first from my mom’s library, I was about 13. She is also an avid reader; it was Chances by Jackie Collins. I don’t know if you’d call it a romance because it’s based on a mafia family and is pretty action packed not just sexual but still very hot. I think I would still really like this book and now because of this post I think I’m going to do a re-read, if I can find the book and it’s not falling apart, LOL!

  6. @Meghan – Cool mother!

    @Jane – I like this older cousin of yours… 😀

    @Lisa – Quite a few of us weren’t allowed exactly but were operating under the phrase “better to ask for forgiveness than permission.” lol
